deutsche/german Version Rehabilitation experience design for stroke patients with hand impairment

Design Space Mapping

At the beginning we grouped all relative topics about impairment. From the basic two issues (health and communication) to all kind of influence groups and rehabilitation technologies. The main focus was set on the social gap and long term motivation. In the next step we analysed the motivation to move in different age groups. We believe each basic age group to have a different motivation related to their identity . Kids are most motivated to run in a game and it’s all about their reward (" I won! "). Teenager/young adults model themselves on their peer group, for them this creates identity ("we, the skaters"). Adults are most likely  integrated in a bigger cultural group ("one has to do some sport to stay active"). Elderly probably define themselves in a smaller social circle (as couples, inside the family) and their habits are a foundation of their daily life ("everyday after lunch we go out with the dog"). Focusing on elderly stroke patients, we collected basic solutions surrounding the topics of motivation, public space, perception, community, virtualisation (of training), habits and responsibility and grouped them into overall topics. One of the main areas of interest is rehabilitation at home (because this is probably the preferable place for our age group), social acceptance (because they didn’t grow up with game consoles) and personal interests (which had to change because of impairment). Short impression what the process looks like To get a feeling for the usage of the hand in everyday life we’ve sketched some basic and important hand actions.

Cooperation with Relab, ETH

The cooperation with the Rehabilitation Engineering Lab (Relab) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) includes assistance in the fields of mechanics and electrotechnic but also their long term knowledge in the area of rehabilitation, assistance engineering and robotic applications. Their focus is set on patients with sensomotoric impairment of hand and upper arm. Because of the cost and size of today's training tools, they are interested in the development of a low cost and small sized home alternative. While they have the tools to define the exact range of possible movement in the patient's limbs and therefore also the state of training, they are momentarily not focused on the topic of social acceptance. The main questions of this collaboration project are therefore: - How is training for arm and hand feasible? - How can a long term training motivation be established ? - How can rehabilitation be integrated into private life and home?

Concept Video & Presentation

To summarise all this in an easy to understand, short but emotional way, we produced a 2 minute short animation (see upper part of this post). Deliberately (mainly for story telling reasons) we used retro style in music, illustration and effects. For the same reason we also simplified medical and technical facts and focused on the emotional part of the "story". The first concept presentation
