Before the workshop, as a background discussion the following questions are posed: What is the state of the art, current status and future directions of research and artistic practice in the field of gesture based musical performance/creation? What are examples of gestural interaction in existing products and how is sonic feedback to be used to enhance the experience? Discussion Points :

• What are the common issues between sonic interaction design and musical interaction using gestures?
• How do both fields describe their methods and how well are they adapted on the entire range of novice to expert interactions (i.e. general public vs. instrumental performer).
• What are the scenarios where both fields apply and methods and insights are generalize-able beyond their specific perspective?
• What are: - semantic types of sounds? - gesture in music (performance/production)? - gestures in interaction? - gestures in auditory cognition?
• What are the roles of expression and function?
• How do you define gesture in different musical contexts?
• Characterize and qualify free gestures vs. tethered gestures (objects relationships: tangible -> intangible -> symbolic)
