Motivation

Before I wandered into the world of digital design I studied photography. That was my first passion. Over the years I´ve missed telling stories within the frame of a photograph. Thus I wanted to make a project where I could explore photography.

Photography: a documented reality?

A photograph is often presented as documentation in for example street photography. But the image you see is really just a fragment of the reality, a snapshot directed within the power of the photographer. Photograph by Diane Arbus

Challenge the boundaries of photography as a medium

I want to explore what we perceive as a doucmented reality by adding another layer of "reality"; the augmented reality. The augmented reality incorporated in the image creates:
  • additional information
  • tranformation
  • user generated content
How will this interaction alter the way we perceive the photograph? And how will this interaction change in various contexts? "Context (language use), the relevant constraints of the communicative situation that influence language use, language variation, and discourse summary." Current reseach question

Susan Sontag claims in her book On Photography that: “Photographs are a way of imprisoning reality... One can’t possess reality, one can possess images – one can’t possess the present but one can possess the past.” Is that still true? Can´t augmented reality change what we can posess an image? I think so. So my question is:

How can augmented reality alter how we interpret a photograph in various contexts?
