Within the last two weeks, I spent two days in Magglingen. The goal of the first day was to observe and analyse the training to see how a motion analysis system could fit in or improve the training. On the second day I made some testshots with thekKinect camera to get a feeling for the potential of this new technology. While there was nothing totally unexpected on the first observation day, the second one was really interesting for me. It was the first time that I've tested the kinect camera in the surrounding in which I'd like to build my project. Unfortunately I had to notice that the kinect camera couldn't fulfill my expectations. I found out, that you have to be very close to the athlete to get data from the kinect that are good enough to work with. Also, the framerate and the resolution are not quite good enough for sport applications. Nevertheless I believe in this technology. I am certain, that this kind of videos are going to find their way in a lot of different areas in the near future, one of it would be sport applications. Also I am positive about the kinect camera (or depth cameras in general) becoming much better and therefore more suitable for this kind of applications very soon. Therefore I still see a big potential for my project even if the technology is not quite ready yet.
