Pillow Design

15. November 2010

Pillow Design - What had to be considered for Dream Facilitation and Optimisation

Factors that encourage dreaming and deep sleep:
  • Training - keeping a “dream-diary” (“Träume erinnern und deuten" von Christoph Gassmann) Recording dreams in as much detail as possible and including all sensory impressions like colors, images, sounds, tastes, people's expressions, settings, feelings, and emotions allow for additional details to be remembered
  • Routine: meditation before sleeping, ex: Reiki Sources 1 Sources 2
  • Chakras: the seven centers of spiritual power in the human body. Ajna, the brow chakra is linked to sleeping, waking up and the colors blue and indigo. Vishddha, the throat chakra, is important in dream yoga and lucid dreaming and is depicted as the color silver.

  • The feel: soft and sensuous but supportive - a combination of foam and down
  • Pillow of choice: Gosa Vide and Gosa Kärna by IKEA
  • The shape: classical with a medical skeleton - visibly "pillow-like" and invisibly ergonomical
  • The material and texture: natural, pure, sensuous, indulging attractive (one should want to use it) - 100% satin-finish cotton
  • The arrangement: placement of electronics (gyroscope, recording activators, mic, access to charger connection, sleep-cycle sensor, speaker (optional))
  • The sensors: comfortable and undisturbing (to not compromise sleep), soft and integrated into the design but visible - electronic textiles (conductive thread and lillypad arduino, very compact hardware (buzzer, mic, gyroscope) combination)
  • The signalisation or visualisation of proper use: sleeping on one's back (promotes vivid and lucid dreams and allows for a lighter sleep, increasing one’s capability to remember dreams)
  • The color: (see Chakras) - Silver (often used to support dreaming) and Blue/Indigo (calm, quiet and harmonious, helps with falling asleep, promotes dreaming)
  • The activation (and ending) of a recording: non intrusive on the sleeper, least effort and disturbance to other sleepers: squeeze and turn over
  • The feedback of activation of pillow/start recording/end recording: buzzer, varying intervals (alternatives: light/noise/music/temperature).
  • The smell: an integrated element, emitting a subtle scent on a constant basis: essential oils of rose (promotes lucid dreaming) and mugwort (intensifies dreams, making them linger so that you're more likely to remember them as well as encourages clairvoyance and spiritual protection)
