Workshop 1: Methodology and Research Questions

19. September 2011

Saving in the digital age

Deliverable 1: Design Space and Research Questions

Design Space
Project Approach
The project approaches the topic of saving from the prospect of personal budgeting. This point of view is broad enough to elaborate the whole spectrum of saving but specific so as to enable a concrete starting point. The research is focused on the following question: How does a mobile application for personal budgeting have to be designed in order to have a positive impact on the users long-term saving behavior? Social relevancy
  • Is it possible to teach the user how to improve his personal financial situation by visualizing his current behavior?
  • What effect does a continuous management of the personal cash flow have on the long-term behavior?
Business relevancy
  • Is there enough interest in a mobile budgeting service to justify the investment in providing this service?
  • What kind of potential new business model could leverage the investment? -> service design
Design relevancy
  • How does the application have to be designed in order to provide enough value (or joy of use) for a long-run usage?
