Ground Control Station for Micro Air Vehicles in Filmproduction

Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are easy to control and have great flight properties. The existing Ground Control Stations (GCSs) focus on controling and flying the MAV. In my project I want to create a new GCS that allows cameraman to focus on the camera movement and the images they create. MAVs are allready used for aerial filming. The commercial GCSs are build to fly the vehicle and not for filming. This created the idea to come up with a new GCS that is specialised on the needs of cameraman. The focus of a cameraman is his film and the production of images. He is not a pilot and basicly not interessted to control an aerial vehicle. But MAVs could increase the freedom and aguility for the cameraman. In many different ways cameramen allready try to increase their freedom to move and to create unique shots. Systems like the spidercam or helicopter mounted cameras have been developed. MAVs could be a new opportunity. Usaly those systems are controled by a cameraman and a pilot. Modern MAVs are easier to control so the full control of movement and camera could be given to the cameraman. The challenge is to create an interaction that gives the MAV control to the Cameraman without charging him. And the goal is to create an expirience, that makes the cameraman feel like he has a very exiting aguile and free camera.

Field Research

Target Group In an expert interview I asked my target group what they think about the idea to come up with a new control for cameradrones. In addition I tried to find existing problems in aerial filming and needs for the control station. ->link Observation As a passive observer I visited different workenviroments of cameraman. I wanted to see how they move what they do and were it seems to be more complicated than necessary. ->link Pro User To see what the current control of MAVs look like I visited a professional drone Pilot. ->link

Morphological Box II

Like with the studio camera I started to separate the functional and the interactive parts. The big difference to the studio system is the connection to the body of the Cameraman. <-back next ->

Next steps

At the moment I think it is more important to focus on the direct Control devices. Its the main interaction and it will be the difference to commercial system. For my target group it will be the part that has to be familiar and be easy to use. The whole experience for the cameraman will…

Findings

Target Group The Interview has shown that my research needs to be done. The existing situation in aerial filming is complicated and the coordination between pilot, cameraman and producer is not well organized at the moment. This three parts are the fundamental background of the GCS. It is all about creating an enviroment that allows…

Interview – Pro User

To compare my ideas with existing systems I interviewed a drone Pilot. I tried to find problems and good solutions in the existing remote controls, to improve on them. So I ask questions about the daily work with the drone. <-backnext ->

Morphological Box I

To map the common camera control to a ground control station I took the two camera systems and started to morph them. The first step was to disassemble the system and seperate parts that will take place in the drone or that will belong to the groundcontrol. Then I reassambled the parts as a first…

Observation Results

The observation show that there are two basic control types: 1. Handheld / Shoulder Camera In a handheld system, the cameraman is directly connected with the camera. He uses his whole body to move the camera. For example the pan axle is the cameraman and to move over pan he turns left or right with…

Interview – Target group

My project aims on the wishes and needs of cameraman. To see what is important for them and to gather inspirations for functionalities, I interviewed Quinn Reimann an experienced cameraman. 1. In this video he talks about his ideas for a ground control station 2. In this video he talks about aerial filming and the…

Observations – How Cameraman act

To get a deeper insight into the common workspace of cameraman I observed cameraman at work. At Basel swiss television SF staged a live opera on the river Rhein. I observed different camerasystems and cameraman. To get different insights of different workspaces I also visited the production of Giocobbo Müller at Kaufleuten in Zurich. <-backnext…
